CHL Top Prospects Game

1/21/2010 11:53:53 AM

The game had everything you could ask for if you were a scout trying to get a better scope of some of the players. The game was fast and physical with plenty of skill on display. The Windsor fans were in full support and the building was sold out. Team Cherry vs Team Orr is a rivalry that does not get old and the players proved it.

Team Orr jumped out to an early lead with Nino Niederreiter slipping one past Calvin Pickard. Emerson Etem replied for Team Cherry mid-way through the second with a short-handed marker. The second period also featured two fights which is not particularly common in a prospects game. This definitely peaked the interest of the Spits fans because they love their fighting in Windsor.

The two teams exchanged goals early in the third with Jeff Skinner and Jordan Weal both tipping one past the opposing goalie. Later in the third, Austin Watson of Team Cherry made two incredible shot blocks while killing a 5 on 3 power play for Team Orr which proved to be the turning point in the game. Shortly after, still short-handed, Taylor Hall broke down the wing and feathered a pass over to Ryan Spooner who back-handed it home giving Team Cherry a 3-2 lead that they would not look back on. They added an empty netter to seal the deal with one minute to go.

Overall, the game was really exciting and was one of the best in years. Don Cherry accepted the $100 from Bobby Orr with a huge smile. Cherry was excited about the outcome of the game and also praised Watson for his effort on the penalty kill. Cherry also had nothing but good things to say about the OMHA and the STOP program which he believes will start catching on more strongly nationwide. A couple of players were wearing the STOP decal on the back of their helmets including Taylor Hall.

Players that had a strong game for Team Cherry included: Austin Watson, Cam Fowler, Taylor Hall, Alexander Petrovic, Ryan Spooner, Emerson Etem

Players that had a strong game for Team Orr included: Jeff Skinner, Nino Niederreiter, Dylan McIlrath, Mark Visentin [goalie], Mark Pysyk

Congratulations to Team Cherry on the hard-working victory.
